IF THERE'S one thing guaranteed to sweep away those post- Christmas doldrums, it's a bit of Beethoven and nothing more so than his majestic Symphony No 9. This performance by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra had its problems.
Half the soloists were replaced at short notice and none of the audience could follow the action in the programmes as there weren't any. But this was nonetheless a dramatic, fast-paced and triumphant Ninth.
