How Can I Get Rid of Maggots? ; Your Pets Pdsa Vet Ian Fleming Answers Your Questions

Summary

Q My rabbit has been living in the garden for the summer months, but I recently noticed some maggots in her fur. Should I be worried about this? What can I use to get rid of them? Viv A Finding maggots on a pet rabbit needs to be treated as an emergency and you should take your rabbit to your vet. During the summer months, flies are attracted to rabbit hutches, especially if they have become dirty. Rabbits that have been sitting in soiled bedding will have dirty fur around their back end; flies are attracted to this and will lay their eggs in the rabbit's fur. The eggs hatch into maggots and these then begin to digest the rabbit's flesh. This can cause terrible skin wounds and rabbits brought in to vets with this condition often, sadly, have to be put down due to the severity of the problem. The key is prevention - clean soiled bedding out daily and check a rabbit's bottom at least daily for dirt or maggots.

Q My cat Yogi seems to have very itchy ears and sometimes there is a discharge. Do I need to take her to a vet? Peter A Yes, you need to take Yogi to see a vet as soon as possible. Two common causes of the signs you describe are an ear infection or ear mites, which can both result in pain and discomfort. Your vet will examine Yogi's ears and advise what treatment is required.
