I Have No Regrets - Houllier ; Happy Houllier Stands by His Tough Choices

Summary

GERARD Houllier wants Villa's vital win over West Brom to be a positive turning point in their stuttering season despite admitting aggravation is the overriding emotion in management. Villa are refusing to allow allegations about a training ground bust-up between Richard Dunne and the coaches to take the gloss off Saturday's much-needed victory against their local rivals. The 2-1 result eased the pressure on Houllier after the worst week of his fledgling claret and blue reign - but the experienced boss has no regrets about his return to management. "Oh, no, no," smiled Houllier, who yesterday woke up to headlines that he reportedly dropped Dunne on Saturday after the defender's furious expletive- ridden rant at assistant Gary McAllister. Dunne reportedly criticised the Villa management's training methods, although the incident is believed to have been exaggerated and many of the claims have been denied. "This job is 80 per cent aggravation, difficulty, problems, every day, every minute. Twenty per cent is great, emotions, but a different world. That is why we do this job. When it gets to 90 per cent it is the love of the game. I am 63 and I'm here - it must be because I like the club, I like the project of the club, I like the players. "

I knew a lot about them before I came here. We have been going through a bad patch, let's stick together and push on. When I won't be able to do it, I'll let you know. Our job is about taking decisions. "What is easy in life? Perhaps I was born for that. I am getting a bit older, so I don't get fired up as much as before." On the decision to drop Dunne to the bench and recall Carlos Cuellar, Houllier would only say: "Our job is about taking decisions. Cuellar played extremely well, was strong and solid." However, discussing Stephen Ireland's exclusion from the squad, amid rumours the midfielder had subsequently stormed off, the manager made it abundantly clear who was in charge. "My job is to take decisions, no?" said Houllier. "Sometimes you have to take decisions. I'm not here to please the players, I'm here to please the fans and the club."
