Plaque: The year 2000 Canalside Walk ATV documentary to be narrated by Chris Tarrant next week will celebrate the miracle of the Midlands' canal network.

It resulted from the extraordinarily far-sighted vision of Derbyshire-born James Brindley (1716-1772), whose plan to link the Rivers Trent, Mersey, Severn and Thames together led to a nationwide 50-year programme of digging them out by hand.
