SID Lenthall avoided being called up to fight the Germans for most of the Second World War because his job working on Spitfires was just too important.

He was an engineer with the number nine maintenance unit at RAF Cosford from March 1940 and worked on hundreds of 'Spits' - from their first MK1 designs to the final MK24s.
