I'm Worried My Elderly Aunt Is Being Abused

Summary

QI AM very concerned about an elderly aunt of mine who lives in a care home. It's quite a way from me, so I can only get to see her occasionally. She was placed there by her local social services when she became too frail to cope on her own. I thought she was quite settled there, but the last couple of times I visited she seemed a bit agitated - especially when one particular care worker came by. I also noticed that, when this particular woman came towards her, she flinched, which really worried me. My aunt has dementia and doesn't make much sense when she talks. I don't want to make a fuss unnecessarily, but I am concerned. NT

AI think you are right to be concerned if your aunt seems frightened by this particular carer. The issue of elder abuse is one that, sadly, is all too prevalent. I would suggest you contact the charity Action On Elder Abuse (elderabuse.org.uk) and discuss your concerns with them. There is a helpline available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, on 0808 808 8141. They may suggest you speak to the care home manager, or else suggest you contact the social services team that placed your aunt in this facility. You may have heard the saying, "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing". Do nothing and it may be that your aunt and perhaps other residents will continue to be abused by this particular carer.
