FARES on the proposed highspeed rail (HSR) network would not be higher than on slower trains, according to government plans, Transport Secretary Lord Adonis promised.
Last week ministers set out a pounds 30 billion scheme to link London to Birmingham and then beyond to Scotland via Manchester and Leeds using high-speed trains - though the first stage will not be completed until 2026. During question time in the House of Lords, Liberal Democrat spokesman Lord Bradshaw stressed the importance of ensuring that fares for HSR are not set too high. He asked Lord Adonis: "Would you please take account of the fact that fares charged to passengers are a very important factor in the volume of use these lines will get?" The Transport Secretary said the scheme had been drawn up on the basis that prices would be the same as on slower trains. He told Lord Bradshaw: "I absolutely agree.
