Happy Cafe Memories ; Yoursay

Summary

REGARDING the letter prompted by the Whittock cartoon which reminded L Stait of the mobile canteen in Colmore Row (Happy times at the cafe, July 18). This mobile provided a refreshment service, to my knowledge, from the mid 1950s to the late 1960s sited outside the entrance to Snow Hill Railway Station and opposite the Great Western Arcade. It was in position from 9pm until just after the 3am when night service buses left the city. It was staffed by two very friendly gents, Jim and John, and at times by Jim's son.

After closing and cleaning the site, the van was stationed during the day in Shadwell Street. The service was used by night service bus users, cinema goers, etc. A similar mobile operator in Dudley Street, behind the Station Street Rep Theatre, by Alex (Fleur De Lys Pie) Douglas served theatre-goers, clubbers and bikers. Both sites were popular meeting places for friends and social gatherings.
