Gardener's World Cup Win

Summary

THERE'S just no getting away from the World Cup - even at the Midlands' biggest Garden Show. Warwickshire designer David Domoney has created a World Cup garden, The World Cup To Town!, for Gardeners' World Live which runs at Birmingham NEC from today until Sunday. During the show, the 1966 World Cup final will be screened on the garden's big screen TV and a gnome mascot dressed in an England strip will inspire patriotic support, with special permission from the Royal Horticultural Society which has a rule banning gnomes from show gardens. "The garden is designed for all the family," said Kineton-based David.

"There's a jacuzzi, a lawn for a kickabout, solar power for the fridge, water feature and television, and raised beds so plants are kept away from the ball." The World Cup To Town! won a silver gilt medal, the second highest award, but gold and Best In Show went to Staffordshire Girl Guides for their Stick In Time garden. Created to celebrate Girlguiding's 100th birthday, the garden is inspired by cultures who record their journey to adulthood on sticks. Designer Carol Adams, a Ranger Unit leader from Newcastle-under- Lyme, said the girls had written their thoughts about being Brownies and Guides on poles which were placed in beds of wild flowers grown from seed by the girls.
