Council Staff Vote for Strike Action

THOUSANDS of Birmingham City Council workers have voted for strike action in a pay and conditions row with their bosses. Members of the trade union Unison voted by three to one in favour of industrial action against the deal, under which they could lose shift allowances and see their pay cut.

The arrangement has been dubbed the "Martini contract" by union bosses because they say staff could be required to work "anytime, anyplace anywhere" for no more pay. More than 11,000 workers from across a range of council departments and roles were balloted. Unison official Tony Rabaiotti said: "This Tory-led council has shown time and again that it does not understand the plight of its staff, and especially some of the lowestpaid.
