Aquatics Plan in Trouble

Summary

PLANS for Birmingham's biggest sports investment for decades, including a 50m Olympic-size pool, were struggling to remain afloat today after council leaders admitted they were pounds 73.5 million short of the money needed.

Senior councillors gave their backing to a far-reaching strategy that includes modernising or rebuilding Harborne baths, Stechford Cascades, Sparkhill baths, improving Moseley Road Baths and building the Birmingham Aquatics and Leisure Centre with the Olympic facility and a fun pool. However, cabinet leisure, sport and culture member Martin Mullaney said it was unclear at the moment how the pounds 102 million programme would be paid for since only pounds 28.5 million had been found. Moves to bridge the gap by selling property have been put on hold during the recession.
